If you thought Ringing Bells' Freedom 251 was the cheapest smart phone in India, then you are wrong. There is a brand new smartphone in the market and don't be surprised, it costs less than what a pair of earphones cost you. Can you guess? Oh, just Rs 99!
This Bengaluru based smartphone company is called Namotel and the smartphone is called Namotel Acche Din. Strange name for a smart phone isn't it? But who cares, it is claimed to be India's most affordable smart phone.
According to the company website, the Namotel Acche Din features a 4-inch HD (1280x720) display with a 2MP rear camera and 0.3MP front camera. It packs a quad-core processor with 16GB RAM and 4GB internal storage. It’s powered by a 1325mAh battery, runs on Android 5.1 and has dual SIM support.
How to order a Namotel Acche Din?
Pre-booking for the smartphone is open on the company website until May 25. Before buying the phone, customers are expected to first register on bemybanker.com, with Aadhar Card proof, and pay a one-time fee of Rs 199.
That will give the buyer a user ID and password, which supposedly lets them purchase the phone.
Not an easy way to buy this phone.
Another model of Modi's 'Make in India' initiative
Namotel was set up earlier this year under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' initiative. It was just a couple of months ago that Freedom 251 was launched and ever since it was in the news because of the several controversies it found its way into. Not only that, Freedom 251 was termed as the 'biggest scam of the millennium'. There were speculations about the cost of the phone and the Indian cellular Association said that the rate of the phone could not be below Rs 3,500 even after a subsidized sale.
It was alleged that the phone is a rip off of Adcom Ikon 4 and has an interface of Apple's iOS.
So, will Namotel find its way into a controversy?
As of now, it seems like the problems that plagued the Freedom 251 will affect Namotel too. How well the phone will manage to do can be confirmed only once its delivery begins.
