Student enrolment in English-medium schools doubles in 5 years


When it comes to education, recent figures have indicated that more and more parents now want their children to study in English-medium schools.


Despite overall student enrolment increasing by 7.5% between 2008-09 and 20013-14, and that of Hindi-medium schools by around 25%, enrolments in English medium schools have almost doubled in the same period, According to a report published in 'The Times of India'.


There has been a significant growth in the number of students enrolled in the English medium schools, with over 1.5 crore students in 2008-09 to 2.9 crore by 2013-14, according to the report which cites figures provided by the District Information System for Education (DISE) of the National University of Education Planning and Administration under the HRD Ministry.


Meanwhile, the number of students in Hindi medium-schools also significantly increased from 8.3 crore to 10.4 crore.


The report further states that the rise in the English-medium enrolment was in Hindi-speaking states including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand and Rajasthan.


In Bihar, the English medium enrolment grew by 47% and compared to Hindi-medium, which increased by merely 18%.


Similarly, in Uttar Pradesh, the English medium enrolment grew by 10% as compared to Hindi-medium which increased by merely 11%.
